What should I consider replacing while they are putting in my new block?

While the dealer is putting in your new block, it's a good time to consider replacing some parts that will either be free of labor charges because the originals are taken off as a part of the engine work, or somewhat cheaper due to the removal of the engine (makes the job simpler).

Here's a list of parts that folks have had replaced.  Parts that should have no labor charge due to the block work are noted.  The ones w/the (?) means that we're not sure if there is a savings on labor due to the engine work.

Labor Charge?
The PVC (positive crankcase ventilation) valve, AKA diverter valve, AKA the "Intake Manifold Breather."   This one bears some additional explanation.  The diverter valve performs the same function as the old PCV valves that stick out of the valve covers of some other V8's. PCV = Positive Crankcase Ventilation. Smog Valve.  On the M60 engines, it is located at the rear (firewall) of the intake runners, and it is almost the width of the block. Although its a $40 - $50 part, its 4-HOURS labor to replace unless the engines out. Then it takes minutes.  What's dangerous is that if it sticks (and it does happen occasonally when they're old) it immediately sucks the oil out of your crankcase and deposits said oil into your intake. Picture it.  (Explanation courtesy of Dan M.)
